Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Kawaramachi Jokyoji

Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Kawaramachi Jokyoji
Temple hotel
Developed as an integration and restoration of the Jokyoji temple in Teramachi-dori, Kyoto. Kyoto’s historic temples are often faced with problems such as aging buildings, lack of successor monks and dwindling numbers of worshipers. This project was developed as a new model for passing temples down to future generations.
As the name suggests the main hall is a solemn space, where light and shadow are interwoven, the design creates a space enclosed within this serene, quiet temple atmosphere. Curated art pieces and furniture, repurposed from the temple have been carefully selected and placed throughout the project, expressing this dance of light and shadow, of black and white monochrome and a layering of the projects history.
