Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank Kanazawa Chuo Branch

The project entailed the refurbishment of a branch office in Kanazawa, castle town of the Kaga domain. The building has an innovative arrangement, with the first floor centered on a visitor reception area visible from the street; the second, a lobby; and the third, administrative offices. We concentrated our attention on the reception area. Running along the first-floor windows is a security barrier, as is common for bank buildings, and for this we utilized a randomly spaced vertical lattice with cross-ties of gold or silver foil suggestive of the metalcraft for which Kanazawa is known. Metallic foil is also utilized throughout the interior, where it accents a traditional wa aesthetic in a modern expression of this historic city.
