Higo Bank Headquarters Building

Two themes of this project, “coexistence with nature, harmony with the environment” and “a design open to and connected with the community”, are expressed by walls overlapped with the geological strata underlying the Kumamoto terrain. All aspects of the natural environment are covered. The underground floor and three upper floors of this building feature an interior design motif of “the land of Aso, the forest of Taikan.” With regards to the underground and first floors, the land aspect is expressed with alternating layers of hammered and polished marble, with R-shapes employed throughout to produce a soft, natural feel. The second floor greets the visitor with paintings of the Taikan forest, a motif also employed within an attached conference hall. And, on the third floor, we again encounter the forest aspect, this time expressed with a different technique.
