Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) Osaka headquarters

Ninety years after its construction, the megabank’s Osaka headquarters building has undergone an overall renovation. In an effort to reset past renovations which could be clearly seen in layers, this project sought to rectify this condition and re-create a new Osaka headquarters building. To respect the history of the building, some parts were then selected to remain untouched, while other parts were reconstructed using the most advanced methods. Original stained glass, which no longer was used for lighting, was reused in the ceiling lights, while floor-mounted air diffusers were also installed. In this way, old and new technologies and designs were combined, and new values were created. We consider this building to be an excellent example of historic building preservation not as a cold monument, but as living architecture to be passed down to future generations.
